Scanning Delight with the DigitaLIZA 120 Film Scanning Mask

7

The DigitaLIZA 120 mm Scanning Mask is simply the easiest and most convenient way of scanning medium format film on your flatbed scanner. Whether it's from your Diana F+, Holga Wide Pinhole Camera, or a Mamiya TLR, the DigitaLIZA is what you need.

Photo from Lomography Online Shop

I bought my DigitaLIZA 120 Scanning Mask along with the 35mm equivalent as part of a bundle from the Lomography Online Shop. I knew that I wanted to scan 35mm film for the sprocket holes, but wasn’t sure if I would use the 120mm version much. As it turns out I was lucky I did buy it, as I now use the 120 DigitaLIZA much more often.

Its operation is so easy, simply place a strip of film into the mask, up to three 6×6 frames long, press it between two magnetic plates to keep it flat, then close the lid. When you remove the magnetic plates, you are left with your strip of film held perfectly flat and ready to scan.

Positioning the mask straight can be a little tricky to do at first, but you quickly get a feel for it, and then you are ready to go.

One tip I’ve found useful – either keep the box that the DigitaLIZA comes in, or have somewhere to store it when you aren’t using it. That will keep down the amount of dust that collects on it, because when it comes to scanning, DUST IS EVIL!

Here are some of my pictures scanned using the DigitaLIZA 120mm scanning mask.

Nice article! :) What film was your last picture? ;)

@burslem The last photo was Fuji Velvia 100F. In my experience Velvia 100 and Velvia 100F both tend to go pink when cross-processed to varying degrees. Great film!

it's obvious to say that the 120 digi mask won't work unless you have a scanner than can scan 35mm and 120 film. right?

Hi @itsdebraanne, yes you need a scanner that can scan both 35mm and 120. I use an Epson V500 and have been very pleased with the results. The Digitaliza won't work with dedicated film scanners such as the Nikon coolscan, or plustek scanners, which will only use their own film holders.
