The photos he uses for his artworks may have their own charm, but Swedish illustrator Johan Thörnqvist breathes life into these photos in his own way anyway—by drawing over them. Not just simple doodles, but beautiful and whimsical drawings of made-up cityscapes to tickle the imagination!

The results are very unique, interesting, and dreamy! Somehow, his blend of reality and fanciful towns reminds the viewer to see the world with a child-like imagination. The idea may be simple, but his execution yields a fantastic perspective, don’t you think?

One cannot help but wonder what inspires this illustrator to create such spellbinding artworks. In his recent interview with Leivos, Thörnqvist relates how he is influenced by the world around him, saying, “I like to pause and look at everyday scenes and imagine what could exist in that space instead.”

Here are more of Thörnqvist’s beautiful illustrations featuring imaginary cities and their interesting inhabitants!
