What Cameras should I bring to Easter Island???

34
Note: this picture is dated from some years now, I did not bring each one to Polynesia but have acquired new ones since then…)

So, I’m preparing my trip to Easter Island (4/01 – 11/01/2012) and as everytime I travel I have a big question in mind: what cameras should I bring????
I limit myself to a simple rule: not more than 3 cameras of which 1 of each picture/film format (120 square, regular 24×36, panoramic) But as I have so many cameras of each kind, I never know which cameras will be my travel buddies….

So here’s a list of the cameras I’m thinking about in each category

120 SQUARE:
- Holga 120 SF
- Holga 120 S
- Diana F+ “El Toro”
- Lubitel+

REGULAR 24×36:
- LC-A+ RL
- LC-Wide
- La Sardina
- Olympus XA2
- Ricoh KR 10 Super (with Zenitar 16mm Fisheye and Pentax 135mm Telephoto lenses)
- Canon Canonet QL17 GIII
- Rollei Rolleimatic
- Holga 135 BC TLR

PANORAMIC:
- Horizon Kompakt
- Holga 120 WPC
- Spinner 360°
- Sprocket Rocket

So help me out to make the best choice and have the best 3x camera combo for my trip and bring back the best pictures ever from Easter Island (and share them all with you of course! :))

I will announce my choice just before leaving for the trip (sorry, nothing to win, no piggies at all, only a friendly question to the community ;)

THANKS!

    Going to go backwards here:
PANORAMIC: You can't NOT take the Kompakt. There is a view to be had of the heads, imagine getting a few in at a time. Then a closer vertical shot of one head. Got to be the Kompakt.
REGULAR: LC-A+ RL you've got a really, really wide in the Kompakt, I see no reason for taking another. This camera is the one that'll get you the classic Lomo shots of everything. Plus for a trip it's tiny.
120 SQUARE: This is the hardest decision to make. I would at first say the Lubitel, for that Luby cripsness. If you take this though it's the one camera in my selection you have complete control over. Diana would be nice for that wishy washy look, though I'd opt for crispness on this trip. Holga though! How can you go without a Holga. Put one of the heads dead centre of the lens and it would look super-trippy. However, the LC-A will give you the contrasty crispness so Holga would be a good option. And it's light. Damnit, damnit damnit. I know, take me with you. A girl might be prettier, but I'm strong and could bring another three cameras. No? Ok. Deep breath. Kompakt, LC-A RL, Holga.

...and you forgot film. For the Kompact and the LCA Kodak Ektachrome E100VS (to xpro) and Kodak Portra VC, maybe Fuji Provia 100f. Shanghai for the Holga (B&W HEADS!!! MYSTERIOUS, MOODY!).

@adam_g2000: ha ha, no I didn't forget film, of course, but I don't make a special choice in advance of which film in which camera, as I absolutely don't know what light conditions and weather I'll have there... I'll take a LOT of films with me (as usual) of many different kind and then try to make the best choice when I'm going to shoot in the place itself! :))

And thanks for your detailed answer about the cameras, you have good points there! I'll think about it! :)

And sorry, would be a bit difficult to take you in one of our luggages... but I will bring back enough pictures so you can imagine the trip the best possible way! :)

as adam mentioned I'd like to come along with your luggage... I guess you are to people traveling, maybe if I lose some weight till then, I'd squeeze in... Wish you a great trip there and look forward seeing your pics!

    My choices would be:

    1 - Diana F+.

2 - La Sardina. Because it seems like it would be a good secret camera. I find that when I use cameras that people don't realise are cameras, I can get better photos of strangers (this tends to happen with my Recesky TLR)

3 - Horizon Kompakt. (I'm not really a fan of the Spinner or Sprocket Rocket :p ). With the Holga WPC you'd need longer exposure times, and because Rapa Nui is such a tiny Pacific Island the weather could probably change pretty quickly, as it does in New Zealand.

By the way, are you going for the annual festival they have? It's usually around the beginning of the year, but apparently they couldn't do it this year (I think) due to some political protests that were happening.

    my choice will be:
120 square: holga 120 s or sure lubi
regular square: lca+rl and if u dont want this choice olympus xa2
and panorama: sure sure horizont kompakt

Horizon Kompact, Diana F+ and LC-Wide would be my choices. I am a huge fan of the Lubitel, but with the sharpness of the others, the Diana F+ will be a nice change of pace.

For the panoramic I really think the Holga WPC could produce some really facinating shots- is a tripod already included in things your taking? LC-A, especially if you have the underwater case, and I'm torn between Lubitel+ and Diana. Personally I would go Diana, but for variety of types of pictures maybe Lubitel would be better.

I'd take the Lubitel, The LC-A+ RL and for sure Horizon! :D

@neanderthalis @megs79 @liquorice: thanks for giving your choice! :) I begin to have clearer idea now for my combo... ;)

You should bring one standard SLR and one digital SLR. Of the toy cameras, I would pick La Sardina as the most reliable. The Lubitel would trump the Dianas and the Holgas. You want to make sure that your photos turn out and the Diana & Holga are renowned for their failures. The Horizon and maybe the Spinner would make a fine addition. And, if you can, pick up a Fisheye 2 before you go.

  22. vicuna
    vicuna ·

@emperornorton: thanks! But I don't have any digital SLR and only the Ricoh as analog SLR... The choice between Holga/Diana or Lubitel is surely one of the choice of sharp/controlled images or not, but I love the "failures" of the toys... as well as the sharp results of Lubitel... Horizon will surely be the panoramic cam (and in this case no need for spinner)... now, what to take between the LCA, LCW, Rolleimatic, Canonet or the Ricoh and its lenses... question is still open with a lot of pro and cons for every cam! As usual, my choice will be done while packing...

The BIG dilema!! my choice would be:
Lubitel + for sharp and beautiful b&w square pictures, LC-A+ RL for the classic Lomo style and Spinner 360 for amazing panoramics on the top of the volcanos like Rano Raraku or for the 15 moais of Ahu Tongariki (and the secret thing about the spinner is that you can choose how wide you want the picture)...

Canon Canonet, LC-Wide, Sprocket Rocket and Lubitel! I KNOW IT'S FOUR!
The LC-Wide will give you three different formats and I loved to have it with me on my last holiday! As I do not sympathize with the Horizon Kompakt that much but like the format, I would take the Sprocket Rocket with me and the Lubitel for the "perfect" shot! I envy you already :( we will be sitting here looking out of the window to see a grey and rainy Berlin sky with no sun at all.

@graefin: thanks for the suggestion. Indeed, the LC-W has 3 different formats, didn't realize this as I just received it and didn't test the masks... you have a good point there! :)

oh, god, hard decision... but i would take:
Diana F+ because the Diana offers a lot of settings and different lenses and bla bla i just adore Diana :)
La Sardina because its small and you can take it with you everywhere! and of course superb photos, super contrast and beautiful colors with Kodak Elitechrome EB when you cross process it :) or with Lomography's X-Pro Chrome 100
and of course you MUST take the Horizon Kompakt.with you! :)
same opinion as @odax (hey dude, great decision haha)
have fun on your trip! :)

    @adam_g2000 @volker-jp @odax @atria007 @atria007 @megs79 @liquorice @emperornorton @coca @graefin @guinastrapazi : thanks for all your advices! I'm coming closer to my choice now. I'm sure about 2 cameras:
    - Horizon Kompakt, as it's really the best Panorama cam I know (besides the Perfekt, but don't have it... for now! ;)
    - Diana F+ because it's different lens possibilities (110mm, 75mm, 55mm + close up, 38mm, 20mm... and I have them all) and the 4 aperture settings (as I don't know how the weather will exactly be there)
    - still hesitating between LCA+RL and LC-Wide: the first is the legendary and beloved icon of lomography, the 2nd offers half frame/square shooting and has a great lens too... and I'd like to test it for real in travel conditions.... perhaps I'll take both? :))

no problem! if i had to make a decision again,... i think i'd take LC-A RL because of the typical lomo results :) but if you have enough space,... take both! why not? :D oh,... and please send me a link of your photos when you have them!! have fun! :)*

  33. vicuna
    vicuna ·

@adam_g2000: yes, you're right, they're both tiny enough to be part of the trip! And so I'll manage to shot b&w and color/x-pro in the same time ;)

Final choice: Horizon Kompakt, Diana F+ and LCA+RL and around 30 films.... Sorry other cameras, you'll stay on the shelf this time! ;)
