My First Best Picture

When thinking about my first best picture I was torn between the black and white shots I took at a graveyard or a roll I shot when on a weekend trip to the seaside.

The black and white shots if I’m honest blew me away. The camera (Vivitar UWS) and film (Kodak T-Max 400) produced so much contrast in some of shots I hardly believed I shot them myself on my piece of junk camera. The aesthetic of the photos really suited the subject matter too and without wanting to blow my own trumpet I was very very pleased with what I’d shot that day. For this reason I considered that my favourite shot from this day ought to be my first best picture.

Even so I couldn’t help but look back at the first ever roll of film I shot in a lomo-inspired camera. It was on a weekend trip to the seaside that I took my 2nd hand ‘Vivi’ out for the first time and without knowing very much about the camera, the film and Lomo in general I loaded some Sensia 400 with the intention of having it cross-processed after getting home.

Now given that this was my first time out I was utterly gob smacked. The Sensia did and amazing job at capturing the atmosphere of the location and swung between muted antique looking photos to vivid saturated summer snaps – all from the same roll of film!

There are in fact a few photos I can pick out from that set that really take me back not only to the day in question but back to my childhood enjoying the holidays by the sea. For a photo to emote this kind of response (even when maybe not as striking as my previously mentioned black and white photos) then it has to be considered in my opinion as my first best picture.

The fact it happened to be on my first roll in my first camera? Well I guess that just makes it all the more special.

Ladies and gentlemen…. my First Best Picture

It's Church (Rock) Cemetery in Nottingham. The photos should have their location tagged if you want to check it out.
