Are Lomographers Hipsters?

A lot of people say that Lomography is ripping people off. That Lomography sells overpriced, plastic cameras. It makes me feel so sad. They also say that we purchase Lomography cameras just to look trendy.

To be honest, everything starts with hipsters. When digital cameras were still fresh, “hipsters” purchased them because they wanted to look “cool” till it became an “essential” matter in our life and not special anymore because everyone owns, at least, one. Just like Lomography, one day it will become so popular that we will see people strolling around in shopping malls carrying lomo cameras.

I hate how people talk shit about Holga (I’m a Holga user). They say Holga is made of low quality plastic yet so expensive, incapable of producing nice photographs, fragile, shitty and stuff. But I love it, I don’t just love it like a hipster, I’m passionate about it. I use it like a camera, not a trendy, fashionable thing.

Owning an expensive camera doesn’t make you a photographer. You might possess a Lubitel, but if you don’t know how to use it properly, your photos might turn out unpleasant and out of focus. Holga might be “shitty” for certain people, but I know how to use it properly and my photos turn out fine. I’m proud of it and I think it’s the best camera ever.

And once again, I’m not a hipster because I’m passionate about what I’m doing.

Lomo on.

I was into it after it was cool, therefore I can both enjoy it and refute accusations that I am a hipster. Also, I don't give a crap about what hipsters are doing or about what people think about what I'm doing. Something's either interesting to me or not, regardless of whether some dude with hornrim glasses and a fur hat likes it or whether some other guy with a TMBG sticker on his Mini Cooper thinks that the hornrim glasses guy is a hipster.

As for Holgas being expensive, I guess it depends on where you buy it. Show me where I can buy a decent digital camera for under $50 and we have an argument.

When I was in Spain three weeks ago at a sports tournament and made pictures with my LC-A and La Sardina nothing was regarded less hip than using a flash with an analogue camera. Same in Italy months ago: everyone laughed about the Sardina and later on when say saw the pictures "funny" was the word I heard most often.

I live at the bottom of the world where niche trends often pass us by. I found a Diana F+ in the Art Gallery shop in Auckland, then went to the web site. I immediately purchased the Diana from the web site because I'd stopped using my Digital Canon through boredom of it and spent a year only using Hipstamatic on my considerably cheaper iPhone. When I found out I could get a little more control and choice through using real cameras I jumped at the chance to use them to catalogue my family's life in pictures in a less 'smile and say cheese' way.

    What's hipster about that?

Everyone's needs are different and you simply cannot generalize.

I'm wearing Wayfarers, Chuck Taylors, Jeans, T-shirts silk-screened with a TLR camera blue prints and I love Lomography. So, am I a hipster?

my suggestion to you - 'focus on the critical few, not the meaningless many' - why bother being worked up by what other people think? let your photos show what you are capable of. i DO agree lomography sells overprice cameras - at the end of the day, so what? being label as 'hipster'? heh, so what? :) holga ( i own 2 holgas, btw) is a very hard beast to tame - for years i being trying to get it right, but I just cant. for you, it seemed like shooting with your holga is as naturally as you breathe. well done and keep it up!

Oh come on, lomography defines the word hipster. But, as was said above, being a hipster isn't a bad thing. Everyone else is doing it. Oh man...now that it's mainstream, I guess NONE of us are hipsters. Mind blown.

my view on this: just lomo on, really. i dont get the point of calling someone a hipster in the first place, is it something that you should be proud of because you want to be creative and individual from the rest of the society, or is it (no offense to anyone) something bad because it means that someone always wants to be ahead of everyone else? to be honest i don't get the point of labels. does getting straight As make you a nerd? does playing sports make you a jock? imagine all of the positive and negative views that follow those two labels, just like what we have with the hipsters I talked about earlier. one of the people at my school asked me the same question, and i think the best answer is just to ignore them or say, well this is what i like doing, and if you want to label me that way, go ahead, cos that won't stop me from doing this thing that i like the most. so lomo on! :)

Im old enough not to care what people think. Do, wear, take photos of, and listen to music that makes you happy. Id rather be labeled a hipster than not have any imagination or passion.
