My Dad used to have a good crop of full, fluffy hair. His yearbook pictures were proof of that. He joked that “The Hair” got all the girls gaga. But did it work on ‘Ma, I would ask, and he said it didn’t. But the poetry, mushy love letters and sweet delicacies he gave her did the trick, along with a good amount of hours working to impress her parents, such as volunteering for chores and a lot of other stuff (the joke was he had to cut firewood for the brick oven!)(With ’Ma, his beauty queen.)
Another joke was that when I was around five or six years old, he sat me on his lap and made me take a few sips of beer—-to make me tall! Well it must have worked, haha!
Everyone who knows my Dad also knows that it’s a normal occurrence for him to break out in song at any time, sometimes at awkward moments, but that only adds to the constantly growing files of family anecdotes regaled to his Grandchildren.
Today, my old man may not have his full mop of hair anymore, and cuts down on his favorite malted beverage, and may be a little old, but he’s very much young at heart. Everyday, my brothers, sister and I am thankful he’s still around :-) Happy Father’s Day Daddy!
