Over the last year I have become obsessed over collecting old and antique cameras, films, filming methods, and what gives each camera it’s distinct appeal and quality. I’ve made it a mission to not only collect vintage, but international as well. So far I’ve managed to obtain not only Russian, chinese, German, japanese, American, Czech, but french and British too. I still need that elusive Italian ferrania eura or a good Spanish werlisa to add to my collection. I still pine for a hasselblad 500 cm, a fujipet, a well kept leica or rolleiflex 2.8, but in the meantime I’ll be content with what I have.
I started with a Russian lca, then went to a fed, then a shkolnik, then a lubitel, etc. Then I made the Jump to the lca plus rl. Yesterday I received the new lc-wide. When I first read about the wide I kept thinking well why do I need this? I already have the other 2, plus a new dslr and a horizon kompakt. Then I started thinking how this new camera could replace my Diana mini in some cases. I love my mini, but she rips through my film like crazy and to have one camera doing 3 formats saves space in
my lomo bag. Having a compact 17mm wide lens in places that don’t allow cameras with tripods would enable me to still get those architecture shots I crave or wide angle shots in low light without a flash.
Most people think I’m crazy, that I must have some weird fetish, but each camera you shoot with teaches you a lot about YOUR artistic edge and personality. You learn what works and what doesn’t. If carrying around 10 cameras, and you don’t even use 2 or 3, that means you need to cut back on how many you take with you and learn to adapt with less. I took at least 10 to Vegas last year and I came back with a lot of disappointing photos simply because I was trying to do too much.
The lc-wide might just be the answer to a lot of these problems. I shoot 120 very sparingly because of cost and because I can’t always get what I want with it. But I do like shooting with my holga or Diana when I want a specific square look to a photo. I’m also eager to shoot some panoramics with them. Vegas seems like the perfect place to break in an lc-wide.
When I opened the it yesterday, I couldn’t stop smelling the camera and admiring all it’s features. I read through both books. I can’t wait to test it out this week. So now I will go back to my list of cameras and keep checking off the list. I’m sure even when I have reached my goal I will find other mediums to collect!
