Stop getting tattoos!

I began the year 2010 with just 3 small tattoos. The stars on my feet, the word never more on the back of my shoulder and a symbol on my wrist. My mother hates them. Very. Very. Much. And even though I am 25, I am still afraid to piss my mother off too much. I thought I should probably stop then. I had had my fun and was please with the results (more or less).

Then my friend got his tattoo licence, and began to practice his art in his lounge. As one of my tattoos (the nevermore on my shoulder) did not quite look how I wanted it to, I first let him cover up the nevermore with a feather, breaking off into little birds (keeping in with the raven-Edgar allan poe theme).

After a while though he started to do some awesome drawings of tattoo ideas and when I saw a huge picture of a skull with a heart and flowers and rainbow attached (mexican day of the dead style), I knew it was perfect for my calf.

Then my little stars on my feet began to look a bit lonely too, so I decided on something rosary bead style, although as I am not religious, I asked my friend for a nice crown to dangle from the chain of beads.

Then I thought about how my tattoo on my left wrist was to pay homage to my all time musical hero Leonard Cohen, and it seemed a shame to waste my other wrist! As a child (and still now 20 years later) I was always a Bob Dylan, and one song in particular “Tangled up in blue” can alwasy put me in the mood for a good old fashioned sing-a-long. I found a picture online of a font I liked and decided to have the title tattooed up my right wrist/forearm. Cleverly, and because the song title is quite long, I opted for just “tangled up”, in blue ink. Again photo to follow.

I have always been a bit of a joker, and the idea of a novelty tattoo had always appealed to me, you know, a tattoo I could do something with. I had therefore long talked about having a small moustache tattooed on my finger for comical purposes! One afternoon in June 2010 my fiance sort of goaded me into a new tattoo shop and paid the tattooist to do it there and then! It really is a gift that never stops giving!

Alas, as fun as my 2010: Year of the tattoo was, my dear mother is now 3 tattoos behind as I live far away from her and when we went on holiday together in August, I couldnt bear to shock her with all of them at once. We are off to New York in June 2011 together and I feel I will be unable to hide my shoulder, index finger and calf muscle from her for an entire week and it is causing me some level of distress (particularly the skull, Mum’s don’t like skulls do they?). I therefore am vowing that in 2011 I will not get anymore tattoos (at least until I have the balls to show my mother the existing ones!)

As all you lomographers will understand – these things can be HIGHLY addictive!

Concerning getting tattoos, think about time and gravity. What that tat will look like, and where will it be 40 years hence, especially if you are female. I'm pretty old and can say things like this.

I know, people always say this to me, but then I think at worst I will regret it a bit. But then there must be loads of older people with bigger regrets, so if this is the worst thing I do in my life to regret then I will have done ok!

you will very much regret living for your mother instead of yourself much more than you'll ever regret a couple of tiny tattoos!

That is too true - and also probably the reason I will have broke this resolution by February!
