  • Bouldering on Surak Mountain in Northern Seoul

Bouldering on Surak Mountain in Northern Seoul
Suraksan Mountain (수락산) rising 637meters above Seoul, is the third of Seoul’s three big mountains and a perfect location for hiking, mountain climbing, and bouldering. Add the element of winter – snow and ice – to this equation and you have the perfect combination for a mountain winter wonderland and a thrilling day outside.

Braving the Winter Cold: Hiking at Yongmunsan Mountain (용문산) in the Snow
Want to be hardcore? Want to test your endurance? Then why not climb a 1,157.2 m (3,797 ft) mountain in the middle of the snowy winter cold. And why not get lost in the mountain while you are at it, hiking through the fresh snow only to end up at a Buddhist temple where monks proceed to give you chocolate and drive you off the mountain. Yup, my hike on Yongmunsan Mountain (용문산) just 45km out of Seoul, definitely gave us an exciting day trip away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
  • New Years Day on Namhansanseong (남한산성) Fortress in Seoul

New Years Day on Namhansanseong (남한산성) Fortress in Seoul
What a better way to spend New Year's day than taking a historic hike along the great walls of Namhansanseong Fortress in southern Seoul. Following the fortress wall that snake eight km along the peaks of Namhan Mountain, we spent the day hiking through massive gates and around Buddhist temples, and to top it off, some spectacular views of New Year's Day in Seoul.

  • Cemeteries: The Tomb of Lee Sang-gil

Cemeteries: The Tomb of Lee Sang-gil
In the northern reaches of Seoul, enshrined high on a hill is the tomb of Lee Sang-gil (1556-1637). A civil minister turned leader when he went to fight in the Manchu War of 1637, Lee Sang-gil ended up hanging himself when the Quing invaded Kang-hwa-do the next year. The cemetery is circumscribed by a beautiful traditional Korean wall and has many stoic guardian statues watching over the tombs.

Just south of Seoul’s international airport, lies the beautiful but tiny Muuido Island. Its proximity to Seoul makes it a popular destination for tourists and day trippers alike who visit the island to hike up some small mountains, relax at the beach and chow down on some delicious fresh seafood.

Hiking to the Zenith of Seoul: Bukhansan Mountain in Seoul
In the northern reaches of Seoul, Bukhansan National Park - 북한산국립공원- spreads its rocky wings over 78.45 km and 6 districts of Seoul. I spent a day hiking to the highest peak Baegundae -백운대, which at 837m gives you the most spectacular view of Seoul below.
