Bryan Wynter by Jonathan Polkeast
Bryan Wynter was an active artist who was considered to be one of the St.Ives Artist fraternity, known as an artists colony retrospectively. Bryan Winter lived near Zennor where I photographed his headstone in the beautiful sorroundings of the Zennor Churchyard, born in London, England on September 8th 1915 and later studying at the Slade he came to Cornwall in 1945. Bryan Wynters artwork nicely sidesteps categorization though many call his work abstract expressionism hius most successful ideas were constructions and kinetic art, some known (by him) as IMOOS images moving out onto space, I 'm speculating but I think thats an affectation unworthy of the good work that he achieved using mirrors, lenses and paint. I've seen his work at Tate St.Ives but it is sadly overlooked even by the Tate. A friend of Patrick Heron's who also made his home in the Zennor Parish, work in the Cornwall County Council collection, The Tate and the National Portrait Gallery he showed with Jonathan Clarke Fine Art and died at Penzance on February 2 1975 whilst I was in Egalieres, Nr Arles South of France with John Standing.
