Generally, very generally, a smaller pinhole - that is a narrower size of hole - will result in a more defined, less softer picture , an extremely small hole, however, can produce significant diffraction effects which may sound less of a problem then they sound - if you like that fuzzy logic outcome that analogical fans often welcome, knowingly aware of the wave properties of light reactors in this typical characteristic. The thickness of the holed material is the second essential factor of these two fundamental demands, thick m aterial will produce a vignetting effect as the pinhole acts as a choke for the light - sounds unfeasable for non matter (light), but it acts a bit like hydroscopic behavour in water tension, you could'nt neccesarily get an insect to walk on it bit it sort of pools up and makes the light produce halo effects, diffusion and defracted aberations, these are associated with the phenomena known as The Zone of Confusion, less light reaches the outer edges of the image plane, rendering a bright spot with dark edges, the thinner material allows a hole capable of letting light rays from a wider spectrum than 90º angles The best pinhole is perfectly round to minimize any higher order diffraction effects off irregularities, and in extremely thin piece of material. Industrially produced pinholes benifit from formation via laser etching but pinholes can easily be formed fairly well be a pin and emery cloth through a coke tin material.
