Lead researcher Dr Emilio Ros said Walnuts protective effects could be because the nuts are high in antioxidants and A.L.A. a plant based omega-3 fatty acid.Walnuts also contain arginine, which is an amino acid that the body uses to produce nitric oxide, necessary for keeping blood vessels flexible. A Study by the NYS Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities found that Walnut extract was able to inhibit and defibrilise fibrillar amyloid beta protein - the principal component of amyloid plaques in the brains of Alzheimers sufferers.
