Making use of Art Critic J.E.WILLUMSENS accurate analysis, Eisenstein examines El Greco's View of Toledo, the proportions of the huge Don Juan Tavera hosp[ital on the slopes of the hill have been so reduced that the building appears only slightly larger than a house, "otherwise it would have hidden the view of the city".What El Greco paints therefore, is not the landsc ape as it appears from a particular perspective but an equivalent of a view which does not allow the greater bulk of the hospital to become an obstacle. Moreover,the painter shows the hospitals principal and most beautiful facade even though it is not actually visable from the angle from which the painting has been made.
