Martin Kippenbeerger was, if nothing other than a contradiction, an iconoclast who invented chaos around his immediet sphere of contact, much as WERNER FASSBINDER was in the German Art Cinema circles, and unlike this character he had established he would insist on lunch at noon on the dot and an afternoon nap at 3.00pm He propounded and asserted that there were no n ew ideas in Art, irrespective of the evidence to the contrary, often eminating from his own works. It would seem from those around him that Kippenberger was acting a contrary role, trying to evoke attention and discussion often just attention. "I am a travelling salesman", a meaningless statement now but at the time such a comment would refer to a feckless character without the morality to be able to resist doing anything for money, since Damien Hirsts arrival on the art scene such romantic notions are dead, everyone does anything for money now, so this rather points to Kippenberger being a soft centred romantic who clothed himself in a contrived image of hardened, worldly capitalist.
