Tate St.Ives by Jonathan Polkest (bassdiffusion)

The 1950's were relatively "heady" for ST.IVES and were probably in truth, the death knell of this unique formation before tourism transformed the "colony" into something rather more "post-colonial", Patrick Heron found initial success as an art critic and as such was able to draw attention via his writing to the construct of a "phenomena in British Art", the visits to St.IVES by artists such as MARK ROTHKO were chiefly inspired by the impact that PETER LANYON made on an international level, bringing HELEN FRANKENTHALER and CLEMENT GREENBERG,British painters WILLIAM SCOTT,ALAN DAVIE,VICTOR PASSMORE, SANDRA BLOW and ROGER HILTON all visited and some stayed, though it should be added that DAVID HOCKNEY an d separately FRANCIS BACON both visited but found the "scene" disagreeably inbred and closed, it could be argued that without PETER LANYON there would be no St.Ives Legacy on the level it now stands - with or without a TATE ST.
