In 1938 BORLASE SMART persuaded the portrait painter LEONARD FULLER to open the St.Ives School of Painting and in the following year BEN NICHOLSON his wife, BARBARA HEPWORTH abd NAUM GABO moved to St.Ives. MONDRIAN was also invited but went to The United States(?),With the potter BERNARD LEACH ,who with SHOJI HAMADA had set up his pottery in 1920 St Ives habited the nucleus of a modernist school. WILHELMINA BARNES GRAHAM visited in 1940 and stayed as many others in post-war liberality became residents including JOHN WELLS, PATRICK HERON, TERRY FROST, BRYAN WYNTER, DENIS MITCHELL, SVEN BERLIN and PETER LANYON who was a born Cornish artist with a massive following before his untimely death.Borlase Smart is said to hav e encouraged the modernists to join St Ives Society of Artists, Lter WELLS, LANYON, BARNS GRAHAM, WYNTER, BERLIN and GUIDO MORRIS formed the CRYPT GROUP which became part of the PENWITH SOCIETY OF ARTISTS ,partly founded as a retrospective encomian to Borlase Smart.
