After mating, the Female Cicada makes an incision in tree bark or similar where she lays a whole lot of eggs, when the eggs hatch the newborn nymphs drop down from the trree trunk or (whatever) vertical place and begin to burrow into the soil pronto,(they suffer the problem of being quite tasty by a fair amount of culinary providers) In the ground they have a life cycle that varies from a biannual minimum to a five year stop over, Some, like the MAGICICADA endure a 17 year life cycle or often a 13 year life cycle, a neat little trick they learned from knowing about PRIME NUMBERS , these cycles prevent the Cicadas from becoming prey to the Cicada Killer Wasp and the less histrionic sounding Preying Mantis. The insects spend most of the time that they are underground as nymphs at depths ranging from about 300mm to 2,5 metres, (you have to be impressed by that range, they must have special lungs and extraordinary low thresholds of boredom).The nymphs like nothing better than sucking a bit of root juice out of a tree they might come across whilst digging with their lovely strong legs.they make a tunnel to the surface when ready and climb up the stem they shinned down all those 17 years earlier, where they moult their skins which they leave as a semi transparent signal that they came, they saw and they went
