A period of messing around with paint on various media ensued, particularly Gesso, which in one form or another I still use, it dries hard enough to abraid with garnet paper, or committ scraffito with glass or metal tools, it takes graphite really easily and metal point marks such as brass, copper and silver point: that was one of my initial inducements to experiment with gilders chalk and hide glue, anyway, let me not digress too far. Working with textiles culminated after a combination of experiences, the concept of using something with an extended feeling of "use" and crafting potential, I understand the oblique strategum of some contemporary artists desire to be isolated from their works, a desire to preserve or to re-emphasize the essential concept and to negate the distracting signs of the making, more to do with existence than birth, but then a glimmer of interest in crafts and in the process of making became more attractive to me and fitted the large scale work I began to undertake at that time.
