Do you like leak?

36

I like leak that I did purposely when I burn the film. But this leak I dislike.

It happen when I want to did EBS + DIY Redscale but failed and when I shoot the camera to reach the frame that I want to EBS, I didn’t close the lens tightly with my hand. Maybe that’s the source of the unwanted leak.

It’s really haunted me and I always think about it. I have spent 256 rolls and 90 % of it is expensive slide film.

Seeing million of perfect photo made me dislike a lot of self verdict as failure photo. That’s why I delete a lot of my photo after I upload it at my lomohome.

But this confusing response from lomopeople here made me dig again my thrash box old cliche. So many like for the re-scan photo that I have thrown the cliche before. I really can’t decide it for myself.

Taking photo is never fun anymore. And I never get perfect photo that I really want.

I want more and more. I really want color IR film very much no matter how much the price. But thanks God, after saw amazing photo which taken by expired color negative film, I learn to be patient which is the basic lesson of my religion, Islam, patient have no limit. And I’m try to do that. Wish me luck I can go out from my stressfull illusion of perfection.

I like leaks usually. But, it can be very frustrating if you are trying for nice clear images and end up with leaks or problems with the photo. I do like all of the photos above and think the leaks give them a flawed character which makes them lovely to look at.

@alienmeatsack : Thanks for your opinion. That's the point. I want clear images at this photo. Haha, sorry I'm too much writing an unimportant thing

Light leaks have a certain aesthetic which can either add appeal or be utterly disappointing. Though, the disappointment comes from the photo not meeting expectations of how it was imagined to develop. More beauty can be seen the more objective the analysis. Also, if you don't want light leaks use a camera more high-grade than something lomo made.

@electripipedream : Thnak for give your opinion. I agree but in my case above I think not the low grade lomo camera that made the unwanted leak, it's totally my mistake when try to do so called EBS + DIY Redscale =)

I have to confess that I avoid cameras that tend towards light leaks.

@hervinsyah Both the Holga and the Diana are famous for them.

Very interesting. Well, I've got leaks mostly from Diana Baby. But it's purposely lo-fi, so I leave such photos mostly. Sometimes leaks look weird or even scary. Last times I had a leak (Diana Baby) looking like a.... HAND. :) Check this out www.flickr.com/photos/87373192@N08/9685834688/ (right/low corner). So generally I leave them, if the photo still look good.

@yerzmyey : Is it because you shoot the sun directly with your Diana Baby lens? I always get unwanted leak also when shoot the sun directly with my Horizon Perfekt

Also directly. Not only 'though. :)

I like the occasional soft leaks, just not the rigid, harsh ones. My Diana leaks like a sieve, so I always tape her up tight. Even then, I'll get an occasional one from time to time; those I usually don't mind and can add great character.

@neversmiling : Thanks for sharing. From previous comment, seems like Diana is the most leak produce camera (?)

I never thought before of intentional light leaks, and thinking about it is strange, because it's so wrong in a way in reagrad to the purpose of a trditional photographer. And it means mastering the coincidence? Still I like light leaks and just produced such a picture by unintenionally opening the camera and the leak is nice but. Sigh, the individual result and the charme of the picture is it in the end.

@avola : Agree. As an analogue photolover I learn to receive my photo as it is from the cliche. The problem is the people as a subject at my photo that I tag accepted leak as failure photo eventhough he live in digital world that didn't experience this kind of "failure". Yes, I'm too tired to explain other who keep asking me "why do you still shoot with film?" especially my parents. The only opportunity to answer them is I publish best seller analogue photography book or working as a professional analogue photographer (amin YRA =p ^_^) which is still long long time will happen because I'm too lazy to learn of technique and too anti-social to mingle with the pro. Haha, sorry I'm typing too much and I really appreciate for your like & comment. Thank you very much

thanks a lot for your kind and personal answer ... Keep on the good work. It is the limitation in the minds that pops up everywhere all over the history. So. nothing new;-) Consider the struggle of contemporary art all the time.

I actually love the light leaks in your photos, especially in the first two photos! There's a really beautiful blue/orange contrast that adds to the multi exposure effect. I wish I had more light leaks in my photos, they're like little thumbprints of the moments that make up our lives, left on film.

  21. twinklecat

Also, don't give up or worry why other people don't understand why you still use film!

@twinklecat : Thanks, it's amistake because my hand was a lil bit open when shoot my horizon camera and close the lens with hand to reach the frame that I want to double exposure

@olivesan : Just open your camera fastly so your film will exposed by the sun/light & close it fastly then you'll get the leak. Thanks for like & comment =)

My first lomo analogue camera was a fed 5. I bought it for fun but than got addicted to film. After that first fed i bought 3 more fed 5 cameras (all different coloured) but i always return to the first one because it has light leaks that make the pictures uniquely interesting and beautiful. I'll never repair that shutter curtain;);)

@milos : You're very lucky =) But if I don't want lightleak at my photo I should buy a new camera or an old camera without lightleak problem =)
