Let's Talk: Problems with Notifications

Let’s talk :)

Credits: grazie

More than a month ago I think LSI fixed the server to make the website better. But right around that time or immediately after that, I (and others in the community too) noticed that in the Notifications section, in the “Activity by others” section, the notifications has been all over the place. I mean it has been crazy. Some albums get 3 or more notifications of being published, some just their lomowall updates are posted and some albums don’t even get any notifications at all. I thought this will be fixed in a week or two but it has been more than a month and it still exists.

Case in point are the albums of @wil6ka and @poepel today
http://www.lomography.com/homes/wil6ka/albums/1914247-retro-ride
http://www.lomography.com/homes/poepel/albums/1914223-autumnal-industrial-park

I just knew Willie posted because of the Facebook lomogroup. I did not get notifications that he posted and the right hand side of the screen with the thumbnail sections of new albums does not show his new album now . As for Mario (@poepel), I wouldn’t know unless I check his lomohome since he is not on facebook.

I hope LSI fix this problem in the near future. I like checking new albums and I think most of us do. It’s cool right?

It happens the same to me. I have to check the group on facebook to see who has published a new album. And I´m afraid that I´m missing many others. I hope they fix it soon, this is very annoying!

We're all in the same boat it seems. I can imagine that running this site is a total nightmare and probably very expensive too so I try not to be too harsh. But yes, it would really be great if they can get this fixed. We are a community of lomographers but it's tough to maintain that sense of community when the notifications are messed up and we lose track of our friend's activity.

I think that the server is very bad and too slow...Often I have problems too with notifications, upload, put comments and so on....and I found that some methods like send pics for each competition (with rollbar) are very difficult to use and I loose my patience with these every time! Need to revisited entire site in my opinion. For example insert also the option "remove this comment" (antispam or anti personal errors eh!) .... Regards and salutam' a soreta!

It happens to me too!! It's really really annoying, cause come on, we are in the community not only to see the new cameras but also to see other lomographers albums! and we don't have this chance cause we don't know who's uploading new albums... anyway, I hope that will be fixed soon!

@poepel I say this to Lomography since one year! It's a very simple idea....nothing of extraordinary...I hope they will do something soon!

When I am at the main page, only 15% of the total page is actually useful for me.
The rest are large photos and banners of advertisements directing me to the online store.
Yes, I know I am off-topic. But, if LSI could atleast lessen these ads, browsing could be a lot faster. Especially when checking the site with mobile phones

I think @icuresick have a point here. I agree that all these big ads and stuff running here is making the system slow and uses lots of bandwiths . This might cause or somewhat causing some of these problems.
I was gonna write about this before @clickiemcpete but yeah I don't want to complain so much or right away and I thought maybe this problem would be fixed in two or three weeks but it has been more than a month. Aside from the excitement of posting my albums, I am really excited about what the community have come up with so it sucks really to not be able to be notified at least that he/she have new stuff. Like you said, I want to keep track too.

I totally understand the need for the banner ads because product promotion is how they make money and keep the website going. From the user standpoint it's really not that big of a price to pay to have this great community that we all participate in. Yes, sometimes the ads are annoying but I can see why they do it and I have little problem with that. It would be nice if the ads were a tiny bit narrower so when you are browsing an album you could see the whole picture and not have to scroll down though.

@grazie its a good thing you brought this topic up, lets just hope people from @lomography reads all of these comments, since nobody have tagged them or the people that work for them. My concern as well is the one of @icuresick, its sad that even with his new iPhone, he finds it hard to browse through the site. So lets all hope lsi could actually make the site also a Mobile friendly one.

I agree with @clickiemcpete on the banner thing. I am glad all the banners are in the lomo-style and aren't external banners. On the notifications: when someone publishes an abum I get three notifications, well I can live with that. Whatr I hate is: when some of my friends publish an album I DON'T GET ANY NOTIFICATION AT ALL. It took me while to figure that out. I just thought some of my friends had calm period, while they were actually shooting and publioshing great pics. By the way I am not in the FB group. Is it something I should join?

Thanks for posting. I thought it was me. I noticed that some new albums weren't showing up in my notifications at all. Also agree with @clickiemcpete about the ads. I appreciate the need for the them but I think they could tighten it up a little. I hate having to scroll down every page to check out all the new stuff.

Personally, I Iiked the old Lomography better. You could really customize your home, and no animation stuff taking bandwith up. Everything was faster.

it's not only slow, there are also problems with sending messages, i often can't send them.
i mean if you seperate them into two messages it works. but sometimes it doesn't even send at all, that's annoying.
