LOMO<3LOVE

When i was a kid i remember snapping pictures with my hot pink Vivitar 110 camera, it was rectangular shaped and super 80’s looking, so in other words it was pretty rad.

Then in high school i remember always carrying one of those one time use cameras in my bag everywhere i went, it was the shit, anytime i needed to capture a moment i had a camera ready to go. There was one time a few of my friends and i were on telegraph in Berkeley CA and someone mentioned Mos Def was doing a signing at Rasputin, a popular record store on telegraph, so we all fell in line to get an autograph. Even if my friend Joanne and i did not know who the “F” he was, we still had a camera to snap a shot with this rapper and it was awesome.

After high school it was pretty much all about digital. Don’t get me wrong, i loved digital! are you kidding me? take a pic and instantly see how haggard or not i looked, sign me up! So for years i relied on my trusty digital camera anytime, anywhere.

In Jan. 2011 my dad passed away, it was a hard time, very hard. My parents were divorced, my dad didn’t remarry and so the next of kin would be me and my younger brother, Jordan. We went thru all his belongings, clothes, shoes, baseball cards, comics, all his little knick knacks and of course photos. I was surprised to see all the photos he had of us when we were young, it was sad, and at times hard to look at, but it still made me so happy to see that someone had them. That is when i realized that i have not printed any photos in years! I have no pictures of my family and friends but on the computer! what would happen if my crappy computer completely gave up on me? i have nothing backed up, it would be devastating! This is when i decided to start using film cameras. I figured that if i start using film again it would make me more inclined to print my pictures rather then store them in some “drive” in my computer somewhere.

So, as i was surfing the net, i came across this website. I didn’t realize that there was a community of people that were still soo into film, it was exciting! I’ve been doing lomography for over a year now and i love it! I think i may be obsessed even. I said the other day “the world looks different thru a camera lens” and although yes, it sounded corny, it’s so true, I hope to one day be as good as some of the people i see on here, so till then, i will continue to snap away.

Remember to take your camera where ever you go and use it anytime, day or night, remember that lomography is not an interference in your life, but part of it. Try a shot from the hip and approach objects of your lomographic desire as close as possible. Don’t think and be fast. You don’t have to know beforehand what you captured on film, you don’t have to know after either. But after all is said and done, don’t worry about any of the rules because the way i see it…. it’s all about how you see it. =)
