My Eurocentric ego forgot how small Belgium really is. So if any of you friendly lomographers ever visit Brussels, I will be glad to show you around Brussels and its medieval cities.
Belgians are always a bit insulted when American tourists while visiting Brussels, don’t know they’re in Belgium. It gets better when they call Bruges a medieval city in Brussels. But you have to forgive our ignorance, we still believe we are the centre of the civilised world. But what do you expect? We have the the capitol of Europe, and Paris, Amsterdam and London are all within a 300km radius.
When a fellow Belgian citizen gets angry because an American tourist does not know he is in Belgium when visiting our culturals cities I always ask them what the capitol of Louisiana is. Most people stare at me, speechless and educated types answer New Orleans instead of Baton Rouge. Next I ask them where the state of Kentucky is situated, a state trice the size of Belgium. Nobody knows even if I give a litle hint (it’s below Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and above Tensessee), they don’t know.
So I am living in Ghent, a still to be discovered part of Brussels. And you are all welcome for a lomowalk. Let’s say I know the neighbourhood.
