Opportunity for a Life Changing Experience

But as with most things in life, it comes with a cost. Thoughts would be appreciated.

Some months ago now I met with a tattooist to discuss a thigh piece, we were all set to get started until he noticed I had a couple of scars and sadly thought that the tattoo wouldn’t look as good as I wanted it to because of them.

He then asked what my arms were like…

Short story is, he agreed the best thing for me would be to tattoo over my severely scarred left arm completely. I left with this thought in mind, but lacking in money I’ve been unable to go back to him.

Now, I’ve made the decision that I’d really like to get this arm tattooed. What you might ask, does this have to do with cameras? Well… tattoos don’t come cheap (a whole day session is going to set me back 450 GBP) and I’ve already had to part with a few belongings to try and raise the funds.

Now I’m truly torn, do I sell my cameras? Could I?

This would be a life changing event for me, it would bring me closer to the end of a 17year long battle with myself.

And, as much as I love taking photographs. Do I really need so many cameras? Honestly? Could I not spare a number of them?

I find it hard letting go. Not just of the cameras but of the past, getting this tattoo if going to be difficult in it’s own way too.

This isn’t me giving up on photography completely, I just need to get my priorities right. Right?

Dolly.

As someone who grows attached to objects I use (I'm one of those funny people who believe in object spirits XD), I myself couldn't bear to part with a camera; they're precious partners to me. But a tattoo is a very serious decision, and it seems like you're very set on it. You should-as cheesy as it is-go with what your heart tells you. If it helps you with that battle with yourself, then go for it, but whatever you choose is something you'll have to live with. I'm sorry I didn't really give too much hard advice, but whatever you choose, I hope it goes well. :) And I'd like to hear what design you are settling on (I love hearing about tattoos).

@diomaxwelle Yes it's very tricky indeed, I think I'll have to make some tough decisions and part with some of my collection and keep the favourites (I feel bad for the others now!) As for the tattoo, it's going to be a buddhist inspired one, complete with buddha and a lotus pond. The lotus flower to me symbolizes the struggle of getting out of a hard place and blossoming into something beautiful (I'm not usually one for picking meaningful tattoos, this will be my first of those!) Thanks for your advice : )

It sounds lovely! I hope we get to see some shots of it if/when you get it. :) I suppose if you're making the decision on which ones to sell, maybe picking ones who have over-lapping features with your favorites; like maybe keeping a special 35mm and selling a different one. Good luck!

@diomaxwelle Oh yes, there will be plenty of photos : ) And that's a wonderful idea, I think this requires a list! Thanks again!

Hi Dolly. You have to separate the tattoo decision from the camera selling decision. If you are absolutely certain about the tattoo, well then you should get it. When that'ts decided you need to find money. And if selling your cameras is an option you should do it. I am the guy who talks to his cameras and watches television toghether with them. But in the end they are just objects. I am the guy who needs two lc-a's, in case one should fail... I decided that the cameras are the last thing I will sell when I need money. But in the end they are just metal glass and plastic. All my cameras are secondhanded and have had a great life before I had them, I would lett them go and have a life somewhere else. I would prefer someone used them instead of putting them on a shelf !!

@gauthierdumonde Some excellent advice : ) The tattoo decision is made and is final. Sadly the decision to sell some of my cameras has been made as well. Like you say it would be better for someone to get use out of them, rather than gathering dust on my shelf : ) And I'm pleased to say sales are already going well, thankfully. I think this is an important lesson for me, I need to learn to be less attached to things and objects. Still, it's not easy. Thank you for your comment Gauthier.
