  • IKAROΣ 1

    IKAROΣ 1
To read this blog, copy and paste it in here : http://www.jmarshall.com/easy/html/testbed.html ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ After being teased with ELEVEN ‘Guess the mystery product’ posts before the ‘Launch’ of the Sprocket Rocket, frustrated by the outcome, I decided to build a real rocket camera: <h1> IKAROΣ 1</h1>. <br> <br> <br> I’m quite sure I was not the only one frustrated; in fact <A HREF="http://www.lomography.com/homes/azurblue"TARGET="_blank">azurblue</A> was, just like me, thinking it was all about a real rocket camera and posted a link in <A HREF="http://www.lomography.com/magazine/news/2010/10/17/guess-the-mystery-product-part-six"TARGET="_blank">this post</A> about what could have been like this <A HREF="http://www.poweredmodelairplanes.com/fmr/camroc.html"TARGET="_blank">really kick-ass rocket camera</A>. <br> <br> Another source of <A HREF="http://www.lomography.com/magazine/lifestyle/2010/11/10/my-analogue-life-vintage-style-inspires"TARGET="_blank">inspiration</A> was the ‘<A HREF="http://www.brooklynspaceprogram.org/BSP/Home.html"TARGET="_blank">Brooklyn Space Program</A>’: <br> <br> <iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/15091562" width="400" height="225" frameborder="0"></iframe><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/15091562">Homemade Spacecraft</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user3539560">Luke Geissbuhler</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p> <br> <br> So this was it, combining all these ideas, I decided to build my own rocket camera and <A HREF="http://www.lomography.com/magazine/lifestyle/2010/12/01/my-analogue-life-share-and-share-alike"TARGET="_blank">share with you</A> the outcome… I thought a water rocket was the best way to launch a camera: No explosives, no expensive gases, just water. I searched on e-bay and rapidly found a dozen of models that could be suitable. I choose one sold by this <A HREF="http://stores.cafr.ebay.ca/designeresale"TARGET="_blank">genius guy</A> called ‘Deluxe Water Rocket + Launcher + Parachute Fun Toy Kit’. It was an extremely smart (and cheap) construction, including everything needed. Check out the fabulous description <A HREF="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rt=nc&nma=true&item=310214392990&si=yoqWeoiV0ru5utu9s%252FGBQcIIzz0%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME%3AX%3ARTQ%3AUS%3A1123"TARGET="_blank">here</A>. <br> <br> Then, I had to find a light-weight camera. <br> The answer was obvious: a HOLGA. <br> <br> The final problem was to find a way to trigger the camera remotely. A remote control might have been a solution, but this would have forced me to fix some electronic device + battery on the rocket, and therefore increase the overall weight… Back on e-bay, I found a very nice vintage self-timer made in ‘occupied Japan’ as it says on the box. I love this little toy and use it also for self-portraits: <br> <br> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GHv-Q9Nu90M?hl=fr&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GHv-Q9Nu90M?hl=fr&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <br> <br> So everything needed was ready: <br> 1. The water rocket<br> 2. The rocket launcher<br> 3. A bike pump to inject pressurized air in the rocket, with a pressure gauge. <br> 4. A fisheye adaptor for the HOLGA, to increase my chances of getting something in the frame<br> 5. A HOLGA<br> 6. A HOLGA cable release adaptor<br> 7. A Self-Timer<br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/388/7c/02b4c8014dc139b11eec4eead58c436f9ebb3b.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <br> The rocket was initially in this configuration: <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/432/12/493dafc34a75ebdad32b68e4081c397a13100a.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <br> But after discussions with my brother (another handy DIY lover) we concluded it was more logical to reverse the parachute, hence allowing the camera to face the ground during its descent: <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/432/c3/ba0d9fbeae8a2c20d78861bf8a706e38244c50.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <br> The camera needed some protection, so I installed a bubble ring around the lens: <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/432/ac/b4ae7c71170151b238453dccc82646615614a2.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/302/be/fe1d41407229a2b9390f008e6c77ee661083f7.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <br> To make sure of the correct balance of all this construction I tested it by placing it on a film canister: <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/432/11/0785757d511a6b81a591e93a5d44ee037d1c24.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <br> And then, I taped the camera to the ass of the bottle: <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/432/ec/693b0a4b11b640024c952f0a2c41556cf8c9ac.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/432/ca/ecd7ee0770bda39d000cc10297ca2691c7fa66.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/432/1c/02c83f74d9b3e09c869f4617d3300ba62900d1.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/439/576/a2/8e64afd7889d4967376d1f08d70637952462ef.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <br> Last but not least, since the back of the camera was covered, it was impossible to check the frame number. I used this <A HREF="http://www.lomography.com/magazine/tipster/2009/03/29/applied-mathematics-to-holga-cameras"TARGET="_blank">frame counter</A> instead. <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/432/ad/531e55dea4074582784b896029e0c7569cc1ba.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <br> <br> That was it. <br> It was ready. <br> I am proudly introducing <h1> IKAROΣ 1! </h1><br> (Thanks to my buddy <A HREF="http://www.lomography.com/homes/anarchy"TARGET="_blank">anarchy</A> for giving me the link to the amazing <A HREF="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpJ6anurfuw"TARGET="_blank">Portsmouth Sinfonia</A> music). <br> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wjOoNY-0u8c?hl=fr&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/wjOoNY-0u8c?hl=fr&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <br> <br> <br> <h1> First Launch, 80 psi pressure </h1> <br> <br> A lovely flight, but the parachute opened to early and stopped the ascent: <br> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/z4a0QPQ6saI?hl=fr&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/z4a0QPQ6saI?hl=fr&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <br> The shot was taken too late: <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/539/b0/39df26cf535f4055e8899b90cd8ba45606f67c.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <a href="[Photo:12327976]">Link to the shot</a><br> <br> <br> <h1> Second Launch, 100 psi</h1> <br> <br> This was the best flight. <br> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WeJS4IWjsok?hl=fr&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WeJS4IWjsok?hl=fr&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <br> The self-timer was, again, triggered too late. Sigh… <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/575/95/f054eb15c15bd3758fd7dff11f3ec671d61200.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <a href="[Photo:12327978]">Link to the shot</a><br> <br> <br> <h1> Fourth Launch, 120 psi</h1> <br> <br> Even without fins, the rocket went high and in a pretty steady fashion, but the parachute did not open. <br> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/o8EnIZ2L_LY?hl=fr&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/o8EnIZ2L_LY?hl=fr&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <br> The shot was triggered after, in my hands. Hhhhhrrrrggg… <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/576/524/f5/18abe9117e596fbbe89c2422ecc029977fc1f3.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <a href="[Photo:12327979]">Link to the shot</a><br> <br> <br> <h1> Fifth Launch, 120 psi</h1> <br> <br> The last launch. This was too much for IKAROΣ. The bottle, the camera, the parachute and the bubble ring landed in different spots. <br> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/U44c604mVRo?hl=fr&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/U44c604mVRo?hl=fr&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <br> The shot wasn’t even taken. So instead of it, I shot Simon, my buddy who drove me all the way to this big open space, and was kind enough to shoot these videos. Thanks Simon! <br> <img src="http://cloud.lomography.com/546/576/f0/2211e13ddf2531d1480dff20656c2a886356c3.jpg" WIDTH=480> <br> <a href="[Photo:12327980]">Link to the shot</a><br> <br> <br> <br> So this was a failure. <br> I wouldn’t call shot N°3 a success. <br> However, I have tons of ideas to improve the concept and build IKAROΣ 2. With guaranteed success. <br> <br> Now, my friends, I need your support. <br> Please comment on this post, and tell us if Lomography were selling such a rocket camera, would you buy it? <br> How about getting some crazy aerial lomos and giving a whole new dimension to our activities? <br> <br> So LSI, I would be glad to collaborate with your camera designers to improve my plans for IKAROΣ 2. <br> <br> You know where to find me… <br> <br>

I hope you'll get better, as soon as possible
I don't want to lose you. You're the only one. Yes. There is no another you. This is about you and me. I started to know you about 7 months ago, and I'm really serious now. I don't want our relationship to end like this. I hope you understand. I want it end with a beautiful memories until you could see wrinkle on my ugly face. Only death can tear us apart.
