There are SO many other sites where you can post digital photos, I don't understand why they would allow it here. Maybe we can start our own web site that is film only...

I love Lomography and analog photography the same as you guys. Trust me I've been here since the old site (now thinking about it I sorta miss that very simple Lomohomes site). I seriously doubt that they will revert back the decision of posting digital photos here seeing the 4:3 lens attachment thing is already sold in the LSI store. The 10 Golden Rules of Lomography is bullshit for all we know.

We can either get pissed all day about this or we move on and shoot with our film cameras. I'm sure most of us can distinguish "real" photos taken by a film cameras. So if we notice that a photo was shot with a digital camera there's always an option to ignore it not to "Like" it. And who knows maybe those digital users will be influenced by us film addicts that they will buy film cameras for themselves.

Hey guys! Here are my personal 5 cents on this.
As I said in my shoutbox comment people always did upload digital photos here on the site but it wasn't a big thing because everybody focused on what this community is about - great analogue pictures.
Technically it is simply impossible to not allow digital uploads, because this is the internet and any photo you see here must be digital. Even if we would go as far as banning every photo that has exif data people could still delete that exif data and "smuggle" the photo in. I think with our policy to only feature analogue photos and have analogue photos win competitions we found a solution that works. We want to celebrate analogue photographers and their work and not go on witch hunts to find each and every digital photo on site to delete. This is analogue photo community and nothing about his changed. Why would digital people came here in masses and take over the place now (because of a set of lenses)?
BUT the good news are we are already working on system that will allow you to filter out any digital photos so in the end the site will be much "cleaner" from an analogue point view than it ever was.

    crevans27 ·

@pan_dre Your comment in itself is contradictory. You claim this is a 'analogue photo community' but then go on to say we can filter out digital. If this were a analogue community then surely we wouldn't need that option? And before you say every image is digital....... you know exactly what we mean. And maybe people will come here in masses if your company continues to shy away from the very principles it started out with. Don't insult us by claiming not to understand why people are unhappy.

@crevans27 Of course I know what you mean, I was merly speaking about the technical aspect and the impossibilty to make a 100% analogue site. I've been in this community for 7 years now and there were always a few digital shots around but it wasn't a big thing. Because they never won anything, they never show up in streams because they (obviously) don't get a lot of likes and we never feature them. This will not change. There is simply now the option to filter the digital ones away. Is this a bad thing?

  22. crevans27
    crevans27 ·

@pan_dre I don't want to be pernickety but I seem to remember a digitally altered image winning a competition and lomography realising later. Although it was corrected we are now in a situation where that could become more frequent. As you said earlier people can change the exif data. I'm not even saying this is bad thing, but why have a analogue ethos to then change it and upset people? This company is becoming a wash with pure consumerism. Also on a selfish note we would prefer it if yoh had invested the time and effort of these new products into new film for example, as we do pay you over the odds for many products

  23. pan_dre
    pan_dre ·

@crevans27 Mistakes can happen even if they shouldn't. I remember that case, but you know how many competitons were are running per month and this hardly ever happens. We triple check the winners and are super paranoid about this. Now it will be even easier to avoid this situation but there will always be situations where you need to trust the person submitting the photo. Producing a new film is unfortunately a completely different project than producing a lens, simple because of the scale of the whole production. We just released a completly new film this year, and we are working on more film projects of course. Securing film supply for everybody is one of our top priorities but we are not in the position to have a new film launch every few months. I'm also frustrated abotu the lack of film in the market (my favourites are all gone or cost 15€ on ebay) but this is mostly to the big players dropping out of it and discontinuing film after film.

    kleinerkaries ·

I remember a digital photo winning a competition, digital photos clearly described as digital in the handpicked section and even instagram pictures in the "newcomers of the month" article. I am not against digital photography, I just wished LSI would act accordingly to their statements. Sadly, they very rarely do, often act out the opposite of their proclaimed principles and make their community members feel betrayed, unheard and left alone.

  25. pan_dre
    pan_dre ·

@kleinerkaries The digital winner was for the Wrangler Competition in 2010 i think. But we changed the result and an analogue one won. It was a mistake but in 7 years (and hundreds of competitions) I can't think of another case like this.

I still trust in Lomography to take back the decision of allowing digital pictures. There were already a lot of examples, where LSI listened to the community in the end For example the Wrangler competition. Or that they created the purple film. We can change it, if we all complain as much as we can!

@kleinerkaries sad to hear that you are so mad with us and feel betrayed, unheard and left alone. I think we always do our best to understand our community and help wherever we can to make you happy. mistakes can happen and I don't know if you noticed that we are not a huge company. me for example handling the whole German speaking market alone and sometimes it's hard to keep track of everything at the same time. same goes for the team in Vienna. @atria007 why didn't you contact the people at Lomography Spain and tell them when a picture of the day is digital? That never happens in the German market and if the community would immediately write me.

  33. pan_dre
    pan_dre ·

@shoujoai This is what i meant before. There was never a decision to allow digital photos on the site. I think this is bit of a misunderstanding.
We are an analogue photo community . Some people always uploaded digital ones (maybe to have them on the same plattform as their analogue ones) but we never scanned the site and deleted them or anything (whx would be pointless anyway). Now it will just be clearer and with the filter option you can bascially make your view on Lomography completly digital free. I still doubt that the percentage of digital photos will go any up.

@zonderbar I know you in person work hard and I sometimes feel sorry for you, because I have got a notion that you are the only one really working at LSI. You always come back to my questions and are very helpful. Unfortunately this does not apply to LSI's customer service (not answering, not knowing their own legal terms, not speaking the language of the country you are calling them in) and International LSI (not delivering won prices, not fixing notification problems and/or black squares). So everything goes back to you and you complete someone elses work. Don't feel offended by members being against digital photos, I don't think anyone blames you or pan_dre in person as we know, the decisions were/are made at a higher level.

@zonderbar "I think we always do our best to understand our community..." If this is true when hearing about allowing digital photos on Lomography did anybody at Lomography speak up and say "this isn't going to go down well with our customers?".

@discodrew the point it that this new feature gives us the possibility to even filter digital photos that have already been on Lomography for many years and makes it possible for you to filter out any digital pictures for the future. I'm sure we won't get flooded by digital pictures from now on and we also won't become Flickr. Our base is analog and will stay analog.

As I live in Brazil, LSI always let us down. We can't buy lomochrome, we can't buy belairgon lenses for the Belair, we have problems to buy film, we can't develop the films by mail as other countries, just to say some. I really understand that this community is analogue and it has to keep it like this! LOMO ON!

  51. alanfalzon

Im not happy with this going digital idea.... Lomography is about analog.. there are 1000s' of other places to post digitally shot photos.. As i see it, Lomography is loosing what it stands for.. It is backing away from the reasons it exists, to become just another photo posting site.. I loved the idea of a place were all is i have to check each image to see if it was shot digitally.. We all know that it's products were never cheap but many accepted it to helpe create this community.. Now Lomography is going digital!!!! Ridiculous.. Not fair....Disappointing..

@Pan_dre May I ask who you are? Like, what is your job with Lomography? By the way, I'm another who doesn't want to see any digital pics on the site, or equipment made for digital cameras- totally weird move.

  53. kevinhodur
    kevinhodur ·

Not something I want to see, no. Maybe this is an attempt to bridge the digital people back over to analogue. I don't know the thinking here. Honestly, though, are any of us going to switch to digital? The only concern I see is if we get overwhelmed by the digital tide, and those digi-folk have plenty of other places to post. That balance needs to be maintained, where analogue is what matters here.

Between difficulty in getting films like T64 and RMS 100/1000 and this move, I'm getting a bit pessimistic.

Hmm anybody that works for Lomography dot com this is not an issue about digital photos posing as analogue and winning contests, tho that is a BAD thing, that is more an issue with the people not understanding the site... No our issue CLEARLY is with Lomography Dot Com recently changing toward DIGITAL by selling camera lenses for digital cams(for shame Lomo!!!) including the highly regarded Petzval lens and introducing a question on the Lab "is this photo digital?" That right there is a point of no return... Good comments lomopals
