Final Update: Unsatisfying lens flare

I wondered what it was at first, then realised It was recurring…

After browsing through my photo album last night I found this:

I shot this with an entirely different camera, and the flare is there! So it’s not my camera, it has to be the scanner. Thanks to those who commented – I’ve got to the bottom of it!

LATEST: Cleaned the scanner bed. Problem seems to be gone. I hope this post helps anyone with a similar problem in the future… However, why is my LCA now chewing the sprockets holes in every film I run through it…

@atria007 weird isn't it! Maybe it's a scratch or a hair or something. I can't see anything on the lens...

hang on a minute, it's not just a flare, there's other stuff, AND it's all identical. Could this be the scanner!!!! :( GRRRR.

My LCA doesn't do it! If it did I would be highly annoyed and seriously don't think it's cool. It looks like lens dirt to me. Give the lens a good clean (or if you don't know how to do it...let a camera store do it for you) and I think that will solve your problem.

@dragontw Thanks for the advice on this, though I realised today another shot had it, from a different camera. I can relax about the LCA!

Yikes, at least you eliminated the camera. Hope you narrow it down further and can fix.

@neanderthalis I think I'll give the scanner a really, really good wipe and check it again next time I scan negs, which should be tomorrow.

Glad it wasn’t the LC-A Adam, its probably a minute dust particle… its our worst enemy in the lab and when scanning.. spending extra time on a job touching out finger prints and dust!!
Have fun cleaning and buffing! It will be satisfying. On a sad note, I dropped my LC-A+ at the zoo on Sunday and its come loose on the top, so my next step is to try pull it apart and fix it, so fingers crossed.

@kiri-girl Nooooooooooooooooooooooo! I feel for you! PS: did you notice I plagarised you terribly in the last album I did? Look at the doubles from Paris (greeny ones, not red) and see if you can spot me copying your avatar shot!

@adam_g2000 I have noticed my LC-A+ has little film bits when I unload it. I think it just chews the feeder tab of the film when I unwind and it tries to release from take up spool. The rest of the negative seems fine. On the other hand, my wife had a Diana Mini that ate sprocket holes with a vengeance. Switching modes, not switching modes and different films it didn't matter. It would lock up and freeze or skip frames chewing up as it went. After much frustration she just tossed it. Not that it is what you want to do with your LCA. Just wanted to share frustration. I hope you get a solution.

@neanderthalis aren't diana mini's famous for that foul behaviour? I'm going to run one more film through my LCA and if it does it again, see if LSI will look at it for me. I mean it's the RL model and they aren't going to be around forever.

@adam_g2000 Could you still be in the warranty period under LSI ? As for the Diana Mini, we did not know all that much about that model prior to receiving as a gift, but I am wary of buying another mini. I purchased a 35 back for the Diana F+ and like that better. Let us know how it works out with the RL .

@neanderthalis definitely under warranty, thanks for pointing that out!
