Well known for his classic works in the genres of suspense and psychological thrillers, his films engage the audience through thrilling narratives on violence, murder and crime that cruelly withhold information from the characters themselves and the audience, often with twists in the endings. His skill in tackling themes of psychoanalysis plus his voyueristic camera work mimicking a person's gaze, framing each shot for maximum emotional effect and use of innovative editing style are all a legacy to world cinema influencing the likes of Brian De Palma, François Truffaut, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Claude Chabrol, M. Night Shyamalan, Michael Mann, David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Park Chan-wook, Dario Argento, John Carpenter, William Friedkin, Jonathan Demme, Tim Burton, Mel Brooks and David Fincher. No doubt, Hitchcock has successfully curved his name in the halls of cultural iconography. He once said: "What is drama but life with the dull bits cut out."
