Primarily a camera repair and restoration business, The Camera Doctor of Decatur, Georgia has not succumbed to the digital evolution of photography since Steve and his wife opened their doors 36 years ago. He has maintained and strengthened his commitment to analogue photography, and recently branched out to serve the increasing number of toy camera enthusiasts who frequent the premises. The walls of the shop are lined with vintage cameras of all sorts, from large format to 35 mm. Many are part of Steve’s personal collection, and some he might part with if you make the right offer. There is even a (rarest of rare) B+W lab on site. As a true devotee he offers just about every type of film in the shop, as well as a wide selection of plastic and Lomography cameras (of course!). All of this is more than enough to make this girl very happy.

(Camera Doctor HQ)

<b>So, Camera Doctor, what is the strangest repair you've ever been asked to do?</b>
I see a lot of vintage cameras, but even I am amazed by some of the rare examples that come into the shop. About 8 years ago an old German camera came in, the name of which I've forgotten. I research unusual specimens in my camera catalogues, and this one was pictured with the notation that only one was known to have been made. I realized that I was looking at number two, and it was in better shape than the original! I fixed it up good as new for the customer, but I still am amazed by what people have stuck away in their attics.

<b>Favorite place in Decatur to bring your camera? Got a picture to prove it?</b>
The Old Decatur Cemetery, which is a very old historical burying ground with Civil War graves and even older. It's still an active cemetery and many of the older families in the area have plots there. It's an oasis, with a pond and geese, and is especially lovely in late afternoon light.

<img src="http://www.lomography.com/blog/images/12089684441771.jpg" class="img">
(Steve's favorite place to shoot in Decatur, GA)

<b>"I never leave home without . . ." </b>a small 35 mm camera. I have several alternates: a Rollei 35, and Olympus XA, and an Olympus Stylus. You never know when a shot will come along.

<b>Favorite film and why?</b>
I'm very partial to any Fuji 1600 speed film. It has great flexibility and latitude for a wide range of conditions. It also has auto color balance. Overexpose it by one stop and it always turns out great.

<b>Southern Rock or the Blues?</b>
I favor the blues. They're connected to real life and you can hear and understand the words. The blues are real.

<b>The first starter camera you recommend, and why?</b>
I like the Holga, especially the Holga 135. For between $30 and $50 you can get a camera with a bulb setting and a cable release feature and take great pictures without a lot of fuss. It's a small upfront investment to see if you really want to pursue analogue photography.

<b>Peachy keen, best place to get dessert:</b>
A relatively new place in Decatur - The Chocolate Bar. Very lush and decadent for those addicted to sweet treats, especially those who can see their way to mixing chocolate and wine. They offer an awesome chocolate martini. They also have contemporary art displayed and regular musical events. http://www.thechocolatebardecatur.com/

<b>What makes Decatur like no other place on earth?</b>
The Old Courthouse Square on the Fourth of July. One of my first visits to this town happened to be over the Fourth, and with the gathering there for a band concert and fireworks it felt like going back to the 1880s. I fell in love with this small town nestled next to the big city of Atlanta immediately.

<b>Favorite vintage Russian camera?</b>
The Lomo LC-A. The vintage ones are good and solid, very reliable. I also like the new reproductions, they still produce great results.

(The Doctor - Steve Schwab)

<b>Best and worst thing about digital photography?</b>
Digital is great for quick applications, doing shots to post online or send to friends through e-mail. The worst thing about it is its lack of true archival capabilities. File types and media keep changing and in the process a lot of photos will inevitably be lost.

<b>4 reasons to perpetuate analogue photography?</b>
 1. Each camera (and film for that matter) has its own personality, so the range of photos you can get with analogue is much wider than with digital. Digital photography has a sterile quality.
 2. Archival properties. Film can, if stored properly, maintain the integrity of the work for a very long time.
 3. Great resolution and sharpness. Even the most powerful digitals don't approach the detail captured by a 35mm negative.
 4. Latitude. Analogue photography just gives you a lot more choices and latitude. Between what you can do in-camera and in the darkroom, you can get just about any look you want.

This is surely one analogue proprietor who has decided to stand up, fight, and secede from the digital union.

Thanks y’all.

Laura Jacqueline
